Frequently asked questions
Moving Questions, Straight Answers
The questions people ask a moving company most: booking, estimates, moving day and protecting your things. Don’t see yours? Call 419-478-1638.
Booking
Scheduling Your Move
How far in advance should I book?
The sooner the better. Four to six weeks ahead is ideal. In summer our schedule usually fills two to four weeks ahead, and in winter one to two weeks. Fridays and Saturdays fill first. If you’re working around a closing, a lease or a new job, call as soon as you know your date.
Can you help with a last-minute move?
Often, yes. Call 419-478-1638 and we’ll check the schedule. Plenty of our reviews come from customers we fit in on short notice.
What’s the best time of year to move?
We move all year. Spring and fall usually bring milder weather, while summer is the busiest season, so book early if you’re moving between June and August.
Do I need to be home for the whole move?
No. Before we start, someone needs to review the paperwork and coverage options with us and sign. That can be you or a friend or family member you trust. After that you don’t need to stay for every minute.
Can you move just one item?
Yes. We regularly move single heavy items like refrigerators, washers and dryers, pianos and bedroom sets, across town or just to another room or floor.
Estimates & billing
What Your Move Will Cost
How do I get an estimate?
Fill out the free estimate form or call 419-478-1638. We’ll look at your move in person, by video or over the phone and give you a free, no-obligation estimate in writing.
How do you charge for local moves?
Local moves are charged by the hour, based on the number of movers and trucks your move needs. We don’t bill for lunches or breaks. Your estimate explains exactly how the time is counted.
How do you charge for long-distance moves?
Long-distance pricing depends on the crew and trucks your home needs and on the distance. Longer trips include fuel and, when the crew must stay overnight, lodging. It’s all laid out in your written estimate.
How many movers will you send?
Most homes of two bedrooms or less get a two-mover crew. Larger homes get crews of three, four, five and up to eight movers. We’ll recommend the right size in your estimate.
Are there hidden fees?
We work hard to be up front about every charge. If your move changes and needs more crew or equipment, we’ll always talk with you first. You’ll never be charged for anything without your knowledge and permission. Ohio law also requires movers to publish an intrastate tariff, and ours is available on request.
Should I tip my movers?
Never required. If you feel the crew did an exceptional job, a tip is a kind way to say thanks, in cash or added to your payment.
How can I save money on my move?
Plan ahead, get rid of what you don’t want before moving day, and decide which parts you can do yourself. Packing your own boxes (with our sturdy supplies) and having everything ready when the crew arrives both shorten the job.
Moving day
What to Expect on the Day
What time will the crew arrive?
We schedule morning and afternoon arrival windows. Your crew gives you a courtesy call when they’re on the way, and same-day appointments are sometimes possible depending on the schedule.
Do you take apart and put back together furniture?
Yes. Our movers bring tool kits for basic disassembly and reassembly of beds, desks, tables and most common household and office furniture.
Do I need to empty my furniture drawers?
It depends on the piece. Clothing can usually stay in standard dressers, but take out books, jewelry, artwork and anything heavy, fragile or valuable. Large or heavy armoires should be emptied (we have wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes). Two-drawer filing cabinets can stay full if locked; larger, lateral and fireproof cabinets should be emptied.
Can you disconnect my appliances and TV?
We’re happy to move appliances, but for insurance reasons we can’t disconnect or reconnect gas, electric or water lines. Please also take down wall-mounted TVs and speakers and unplug electronics before we arrive.
What if the weather is bad?
We work through most weather. In a hard rain the crew may pause until it passes, and breaks aren’t billed. With heavy snow or ice we sometimes push a morning start back to let roads clear. Prefer a different day? Call and we’ll look for one.
Protecting your things
Floors, Furniture & Fragile Things
Do you protect my floors and woodwork?
Absolutely. Every crew brings heavy-duty canvas runners and door jamb pads. If you’d like extra protection somewhere, just ask.
How do you protect my furniture?
Moving blankets to prevent scratches, plastic wrap to keep drawers and doors closed, lifting straps for heavy pieces, ramps over steps, and straps in the truck so nothing shifts in transit. Boxes are stacked to protect what’s inside and to use the space well.
Can you pack for me?
Yes: the whole house, just the fragile things, or the rooms you didn’t get to. We use heavy-duty boxes in small, medium and large sizes, packing paper, heavy-duty tape and shrink wrap. See packing services.
What we can’t move
Keep These With You
What should I move myself?
Please keep these with you: driver’s licenses, passports, birth certificates and other important documents; medications; pets; jewelry, watches and other small valuables; computer backups and sensitive information; firearms; and perishable food.
What items can’t go on the truck?
Flammable and hazardous materials: fireworks, propane tanks, gas cans, paint, cleaning supplies, aerosol cans, pesticides, scuba tanks, pool chemicals and charcoal. Please use them up, give them away or dispose of them safely before moving day.
Licensing & coverage
Licensed, Insured & Accountable
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Fox Relocation Service is licensed and insured for interstate and intrastate household goods moves for residential and commercial customers: USDOT 1271511, MC-496640, Ohio PUCO certificate 60244-HG. We also provide workers’ compensation and unemployment coverage for all our workers.
What happens if something is damaged?
We do everything we can to prevent damage, but movers are required to let you choose how you’ll be reimbursed if it happens. Basic released-value coverage (60 cents per pound per item) is included at no extra charge. Full-value protection is available for an added cost and must be chosen before the move starts. We’ll walk you through both before you sign.
What is a bill of lading?
It’s the contract between you and your mover: the services, the dates, where your things are coming from and going to, and the terms of the move. Read it before you sign, and ask us about anything that isn’t clear.
How can I check a mover’s license?
Interstate movers can be looked up by USDOT number at protectyourmove.gov (FMCSA). Ohio household goods carriers need a certificate from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. Ours are USDOT 1271511 and PUCO 60244-HG.
